  • New Fall Dessert Menu

We've been having some fun in the Shortcake area this week.  Now that the stores already have Halloween candy on the shelves and even Starbucks has their "PSL" (Pumpkin Spice Latte) available, we figured it was time to release our new Fall Dessert Menu!

    New Fall Menu...

Yes!  Our Pumpkin Pie Milkshake has returned.  But it brought some friends along too.  We brought back the Apple Pie Milkshake, now with some graham cracker crumbs.  My new favorite milkshake would be the "Birthday Cake" with colorful sprinkles.  Yes, I also happened to celebrate my birthday earlier this week. ;)  Dad has been asking for a caramel milkshake for a while, so we came up with two: White Chocolate Caramel and Heath.  Yep, my work here is done.

But, we didn't stop there.  Next up, our new Dessert Cups!  Everyone loves a chocolate turtle, right?  You know those tasty little clusters of nuts, chocolate and caramel.  Yep.  That's what we did.  Take our vanilla ice cream, top it with hot fudge, caramel and whip cream.  Yum.

But what about the cheesecake lovers? We came up with two choices: our Pumpkin Cheesecake Cup or a Strawberry Cheesecake Cup.  And yet, I still wanted more.  So, thinking about all great things that go with fall, I couldn't stop there.  Next up, is our Smore's in a cup.  People, I ate the whole thing.  I. Could. Not. Stop. It was that good!  Without giving away any secrets ;) there's real marshmallows in it!  How could one resist?

So, there you have it.  I hope you'll stop by and try one of our new creations.  Let us know how you like them by visiting our Facebook page.  Or better yet, share it with your friends!

  • Friends Don't Let Friends Shop Chain Stores...

Last Saturday, a group of Plant City Women Owned Businesses got together for our first ever "Friends don't let friends shop chain stores" event at the corner store.  Amanda Pope of Restore Soul Studios, came up with the idea for a group of "girlfriends" to get together and showcase their products and services.  Cynthia, owner of the corner store, very kindly opened up her store to hold the event.  With about 10 different businesses present, the corner store was packed!  Sister's and Company, Southern Posh, Ego Girl Outfitters, Momma Knows Bows,  Heather Dykstra's Tabata Fitness and Michelle Ferguson Photography were some of the exhibitors present.

Cynthia allowed us to set up behind the bar, so we brought a lot of goodies for snacking.  We set up a sampling station with marinated mushrooms, marinated artichokes and our new crushed olive spread.  This crushed olive spread is made with green olives and jalapenos, so be ready for a spicy bite.  We also sampled our Amish made cheese curds.  If you ever wondered what they taste like, the best way to describe them is a salty mozzarella.  They are already cut in little pieces so they are great for snacking.

We also brought our Strawberry Salsa and our Five Amigos Roasted Pepper Salsa for dipping with our Veggie Chips.  But we couldn't truly have a sampling station if we didn't sample some of our new jams.  We had Peach Jalapeno, Gooseberry Jelly, Tropical Jam and Christmas Jam.  The best seller by far was the Gooseberry Jelly.  I'm not sure how to describe it, but it reminds me of guava jelly.  The Tropical Jam was also well received; it's made with coconut, mango, kiwi, banana and pineapple.  It definitively packs a nice punch of flavors.  The Christmas Jam is made with strawberries and cranberries and it's a perfect mix of sweet and tart.

While the event was great to raise awareness and showcase a lot of small businesses in Plant City, the highlight of the event was Madison's Mission.  This little girl who is raising money to help families in need is wiser beyond her years.  All the local businesses donated items or their services as raffle prizes to raise money for her to help a single family or two during the holidays.  Seeing our community rally together makes me glad I live in Plant City.  If you were unable to make it, but would like to help Madison fulfill her mission, please contact her by email at helpmadisonsmission@hotmail.com.

  • Meet me at The Corner Store

Moving from South Florida to Plant City was a bit of an adjustment. We were used to a fast paced life. Driving on I-95 everyday, or riding the tri-rail to avoid I-95 altogether. Aside from our friends and the beach, the one thing I missed the most was Whole Foods Market. Now, I know what you are thinking. How can I miss Whole Foods when I'm at the market everyday with fresh produce? You see, Whole Foods to me was not about their produce, but it was about their salad bar, deli case and prepared meals. To me Whole Foods was a gate to expanding my culinary tastes with new cheeses, olives, and ethnic products I couldn't find at Publix. So about five years ago, I ventured downtown and I found the corner store.

I remember walking in there or should I say "waddling" in there with our youngest daughter in my belly. The corner store became a special treat for me. I would go there once a week for lunch and look through their shelves. Bring some cheese and olives home. I found the best Coconut Milk at the corner store. Needless to say, it wasn't long before Cynthia and I became friends.

This past Thursday night was very special. Two friends came together to showcase their businesses and also our beautiful city, Plant City. A select group of Yelpers, I believe most were from the Tampa area, made the "trek" to Plant City for this special "Berry Good Yelp Event". I would say about 80% of the guests had never been to the corner store or Parkesdale Farm Market. But oh boy, they were in for a treat!

We set up veggie trays with fresh vegetables from the market and our new Smoky Bacon Vidalia Onion dressing for dipping. Our famous Strawberry Salsa and Salsa Grande made an apperance along with our crispy Veggie Chips. We just received a shipment of goodies, so we brought out our new Crushed Olives spread. Be careful, it's got jalapenos in it and it is delicious!

Of course we brought some of our delicious Parkesdale Strawberry Butter, Blue Blazes, Lemon Marmalade and Hoppin' Frog jams.

The evening started with Cynthia's amazingly good butternut squash soup. How she makes it so creamy without it being too heavy is beyond me! Then came the salads, the hummus, the cheese plate, the paninis and the wraps. Yes, it was so much food. And all good food. I know I'm partial, but you can read these reviews from the Yelpers. Fresh fruit provided by Parkesdale was beautifully presented in a skewer by the crew at the corner store.

But it wouldn't be a Parkesdale event without our Famous Strawberry Cookies or our Strawberry Milkshakes! Yes, our amazing employees in the shortcake area figured out how to transport our milkshakes for this event. I'm so thankful for our team! Not only were the guest served our Strawberry Milkshake, but they also got to try our new Pumpkin Pie Milkshake! I think these Yelpers were in shock. I don't think they've ever had so much good food made with fresh, local ingredients and a lot of heart. If you are ever near Plant City, may I suggest you stop at the corner store for lunch, then come down and see us for dessert. You will not be dissapointed!

Did you know we were making Pumpkin Milkshakes?

Do you ever visit Plant City's Downtown area?

Have you ever tried Cynthia's great food at the corner store?

P.s. I was too busy having fun and did not take any of these pictures.  Some were taken from Meals and Miles' blog.  The rest were taken from the corner store's Facebook page.
